2018 Maserati Levante

The first production crossover from Maserati went on sale in 2016 after its debut at the Geneva Motor Show. Initially, it was supposed to be called the Maserati Kubang, but at the last moment it was given the more euphonious name Levante - in honor of the humid Mediterranean wind, which instantly turns from a light breeze into an irresistible storm.

Based on a common platform with the Quattroporte and Ghibli sedans, the Maserati Levante can hardly be considered a full-fledged SUV, but its dynamic characteristics are among the best in the SUV class. Its purely Italian design is also impressive, expressing the brand's historical identity in details such as the concave trident grille, the triangular bulge on the hood and the triple vents in the front fenders. In addition to this, the Maserati Levante has a low drag coefficient (0.31), a low center of gravity and optimal axle weight distribution (50:50). The crossover is assembled at the Fiat plant in Mirafiori (Turin).

Exterior

Fans of the Maserati brand will easily see echoes of the Kubang concept car shown at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show in the Levante's appearance. The exterior is made in the classic Maserati corporate style. The car stands out with its elongated hood, short overhangs and a cabin moved towards the rear. Thanks to the sloping roof and high window line, the car is perceived as more dynamic and swift, and due to the swollen wheel arches, the already aggressive exterior looks more muscular and menacing.

The front of the car is topped with a wide radiator grille with a large signature “trident”, as well as slanted bi-xenon optics, complemented by new-fashioned LED side lights. Behind the front arches there are three slots for ventilation holes, which have long become one of the hallmarks of Maserati models.

The crossover doors have no frames, the tailgate is topped with a small spoiler, and the taillights are connected to each other by an elegant chrome molding. In addition, looking at the rear of the car, the stylish exhaust pipes (two each on the right and left) catch your eye. The Levante S modification can be distinguished from the “regular” version by its original aerodynamic body kit, as well as larger rims.

Dimensions:

  • Length – 5004 mm, which makes the crossover the longest in its class;
  • Width – 1968 mm;
  • Height – 1679 mm;
  • The wheelbase is 3004 mm.

Interior

Once inside the premium crossover, the first thing you notice is the stylish center console, in the center of which there is an analog clock, as well as a large multi-touch display of the multimedia system, which can also be controlled using a special joystick. Already in the basic equipment, the car is replete with high-quality leather and polished aluminum inserts, while for an additional fee the buyer can trim the interior with natural wood, carbon fiber and even silk. Traditionally for Maserati, the user has the opportunity to maximize the personalization of the interior, which will help him with over 25 different color variations, the number of which will be increased over time.

The car is equipped with a small three-spoke steering wheel, trimmed with perforated leather of the highest quality, and also has special ridges for a more natural and comfortable grip. You can change gears using both the transmission selector and the steering wheel paddle shifters, which sometimes remind you of the car’s sporting pedigree.

The front seat seats are soft and comfortable, and also provide good lateral support. Already in standard equipment they are equipped with an electric drive and a heating system, which will be especially important for domestic consumers. Thanks to the off-road position, the driver has excellent visibility. The seats are separated by a high transmission tunnel, in which there are boxes for various small items and cup holders. Although the rear seats are designed for three adults, the seat cushion is designed for two passengers, so it will be somewhat uncomfortable for a third person.

The trunk volume of the Maserati Levante in its standard form is 580 liters and 1614 liters if the rear seatbacks are folded down, which fold in the classic 60/40 ratio.

Characteristics

The Levante, Levante S and Levante Diesel modifications are equipped with the same engines as the Maserati Ghibli: a 3-liter twin-turbo petrol V6 with 350 or 430 hp. and a 3-liter V6 turbodiesel with 275 hp. One step up is the Maserati Levante Trofeo, presented at the 2018 New York Auto Show. Under the hood, there is a 3.8-liter Twin Turbo V8 engine producing 590 hp, developed by Ferrari in Maranello. With this unit, the car accelerates to 100 km/h in 3.9 s. and reaches a maximum speed of 300 km/h.
