Just look at that massive grille. The changes have already been seriously criticized by fans of the Bavarian brand. But if you dig a little deeper, you'll find that 44% of all 7 Series models sold in 2018 were sold in Asia, particularly China. The Chinese love this style, and they were the ones who asked for this grille.

Exterior design

The company raised the hood by almost 2 inches, which forced the grille to be larger so it wouldn't look “weird”.

The area of the radiator grille was increased by as much as 40%, and the rear received more compact LED side lights with a 6 mm LED jumper and a slightly modified bumper.

Today there are two model packages - Pure Excellence and M Sport. The former has more chrome, the latter has a more aggressive appearance and sporty trim.

Engine: from hybrid to stunning V12

Bavarian engineers equipped the restyled versions of the BMW 7 Series with optimized suspension settings, upgraded 8-speed automatic transmissions from ZF and xDrive all-wheel drive transmission. As for the power units, they have been completely revised by the developers.

The upgraded 3-liter turbo diesel engines received new supports that reduce vibration and became more environmentally friendly. However, the characteristics of diesel engines remained the same.

The US market will receive five different variants of the 7, including the rear-wheel drive 740i, all-wheel drive xDrive versions of the 740i and 750i, and the stunning V12-powered M760i. All of these will be models with an extended wheelbase. The 745e xDrive Hybrid gets a new inline-six engine that delivers a combined output of 375 horsepower, with an additional 14 hp available in Sport mode. BMW says the 745e has an electric range of 58 km and a 0-100 km/h time of 5.3 seconds; in pure electric mode the hybrid can reach 110 km/h.

The 750Li, on the other hand, gets a completely redesigned twin-turbo V8. The combination produces 523 hp, 80 more than the old model. BMW claims a 0-62mph time of just 3.9 seconds for this luxury sedan.

The M760i is still proudly powered by a V12. It's a real devil in a suit and, as you'd expect, delivers 600bhp and 0-60mph in 3.6 seconds. But fuel consumption is not its strong point.

The BMW 740d xDrive is equipped with a 3.0-liter turbo diesel engine (320 hp 680 Nm). Acceleration from 0 to 100 takes 5.3 seconds, fuel consumption is 5.5-6.0 liters.

The BMW 750d xDrive with a 3.0-liter turbo diesel engine (400 hp 760 Nm) reaches 100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds, diesel fuel consumption in combined driving mode is 5.8-6.1 liters.

Petrol versions of the BMW 730i and BMW 740i will not be offered in Europe.

Interior design: luxury, technology and a useful assistant

Interior changes include a new dashboard, Nappa leather trim and additional wood inlays. BMW mentioned that they have also increased sound insulation in the areas of the rear wheel arches, the B-pillar and the caps for the seat belt buckles in the rear. The basic package also includes a Live Cockpit Professional instrument panel with a navigator and two displays with a diagonal of 12.3 and 10.25 inches.

The location of the buttons on the new multifunction steering wheel has been changed. The standard wireless smartphone charger (not on the 730i) is now in a more convenient location, right next to the cup holder.

The rear seat entertainment system now comes with dual 10-inch Full HD touchscreen displays and a Blu-ray player.

With the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant in the BMW 7 Series, nothing is impossible. Finding the right place or reading an email while driving is easy. The “OK, BMW” function will make the process of controlling car systems natural.

The car remembers the last 50 meters it traveled, and if you suddenly need to return the same way, turn on the reverse assistant, take your hands off the wheel, and the 7 Series will turn back along the route you just covered.

When it comes to passenger comfort, forget about motion sickness, the 7 is a luxury and great for touring, especially if you use the various driver assistance systems and let it do some of the work for you. Excellent engineering solutions.
