2020 Ford Expedition

If you are conveying a large family and towing a heavy trailer at the same time, this car is perfect for you. Offered in both standard and long-wheelbase Max body styles, the Expedition offers three spacious rows of seats, plenty of cargo space and a towing capacity of up to 9,300 pounds (with the right equipment). Under the hood is a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 that powers either the rear or all four wheels via a 10-speed automatic transmission. If you're so inclined, Ford will gladly sell you a luxury-equipped model that does its best to mimic the attributes of the mechanically similar Lincoln Navigator.

What's new in 2020?

Ford has added King Ranch trim to the 2020 Expedition, which comes with luxury items such as retractable power running boards, 22-inch wheels, premium Del Rio leather upholstery and natural wood trim. All Expedition models now come standard with the Ford Sync 3 infotainment system and the Co-Pilot360 driver assistance feature set, which includes automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assist and blind spot monitoring. Top Platinum models get new 22-inch wheel designs and leather upholstery that covers most of the cabin.

Engine, transmission and performance

2020 Expedition has a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 and a responsive 10-speed automatic transmission that pair with rear or all-wheel drive. The XLT and Limited models have a 6 hp V-375 version, while the top-level Platinum version is tuned to 400 hp. All Expeditions use independent rear suspension, which provides better ride and handling than drive axle setups on Chevrolet and GMC alternatives.

Interior, comfort and cargo

The Expedition's interior has a square dashboard with large air vents and materials that improve with trim levels. Each Expedition also has 15 cup holders and a power folding third-row seat. Both Expedition models have a spacious interior and, unlike most competitors, a third row that won't torment adults. While a three-seat bench is standard for the second row, a pair of captain's chairs is optional. Expedition and Expedition Max, with three rows of seats and two stretched bodies, were built to carry people and property—lots of people and property. Each model has a folding third row that can be operated from the cargo area or from the rear seats. Both the second and third rows fold down completely to form a flat floor for easy loading.

Infotainment and Communications

Expedition is an infotainment haven with numerous connectivity options and plenty of features available. Sync 8.0 infotainment system with 3-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and 4G LTE mobile hotspot comes standard; navigation plus real-time traffic and weather are paid extra. A rear seat entertainment system is available, but only on Limited, King Ranch, and Platinum trims.

Fuel economy and fuel consumption in real conditions

The rear-wheel drive Expedition is rated by the EPA at 17 mpg city and 24 highway; the all-wheel drive version drops to 22 on the highway. Both the regular-length Expedition and the longer Expedition Max got 20 mpg on our 200-mile highway fuel economy route.

Towing and payload

The Expedition can tow up to 9300 pounds, which is 700 pounds more than the most powerful Chevrolet Tahoe. The longer Expedition Max is capped at 9,000 pounds - still more than any rival.
