2021 MERCEDES-BENZ A-CLASS IS THE ONLY AFFORDABLE "GERMAN" THAT CAN BE BOTH A PREMIUM SEDAN AND A SPORTS CAR
The 2021 Mercedes A-Class is available in hatchback and sedan bodies. The latter appeared in the model range quite recently. Before that, Mercedes-Benz produced only A-Class hatchbacks. The German model competes with Toyota Camry, Volkswagen Passat and Ford Mondeo. But unlike them, the A-Class can offer a full-fledged virtual instrument panel already in the basic configuration. And in the top versions there is a multimedia complex that responds to gestures, multi-contour front seats with the ability to adjust to the millimeter, many decorative elements and other equipment.
Specifications
The basis of the German model is the upgraded MFA platform, which it inherited from its predecessor. The sedan has MacPherson struts in the front. The rear design depends on the type of modification chosen. With low-power engines, a U-shaped torsion beam is located here, while in the "charged" versions, an independent multi-link suspension is used. The German sedan has telescopic shock absorbers all around, the damping of which is adjusted using on-board electronics.
In the starting versions, ventilated disc brakes are used only at the front, in all-wheel drive versions - also at the rear. The total length of the sedan is 4549 mm with a wheelbase of 2729 mm. The width does not exceed 1796 mm, the height is 1446 mm.
Both the sedan and the A-Class hatchback have a 1.3-liter turbocharged engine as the starting engine, the maximum output of which after the latest upgrade was increased to 150 hp, and the torque is 250 Nm. The top version of both versions of the German model uses a 2-liter twin-turbocharged engine. Its maximum power is increased to 306 hp with a torque of 400 Nm. And for the hatchback, the same 2-liter twin-turbo unit is provided. But due to the design adjustments, it already develops 421 hp of power and 500 Nm of traction torque. This engine is combined with an 8-speed robotic gearbox, and the rest - with a 7-speed one.
Controllability and off-road characteristics
The controllability of the German model depends quite heavily on the type of the selected modification. This is due to the fact that in top versions, in addition to more powerful engines, a reconfigured sports suspension and improved on-board electronics are used, providing precise control over the road at different speeds. The car demonstrates an excellent response to the driver's actions. Also, both the sedan and the hatchback hold the road well, which is partly facilitated by the presence of rear-wheel drive.
The German model does not have off-road characteristics as such. Even the all-wheel drive is designed only to improve traction. It is not recommended to take the German sedan beyond the asphalt surface, since its ground clearance does not exceed 104 mm.
Dynamic characteristics and fuel consumption
The German sedan in the starting version with a 1.3-liter turbo engine gains the first 100 km/h in 8.1 seconds with an average fuel consumption of 5.7 liters. The all-wheel drive version with the initial twin-turbo unit reaches the specified mark in 4.8 seconds. But the average fuel consumption increases to 7.8 liters. The hatchback with a 2-liter engine accelerates to "hundreds" in 3.8 seconds. And its average fuel consumption increases to 8.4 liters.
Design
As was said, the A-Class sedan and hatchback are completely unified with each other. Only the shape of the rear part of the body differs. In the front, both models have slightly elongated head optics with LED filling, which are located on the sides of the radiator grille with a volumetric pattern. The shape of the bumper of the German car changes depending on the selected modification. In the "charged" versions, it is complemented by wide air intakes. The German model has a dynamic profile, which is partly due to the elongated hood and the lowest possible ground clearance. At the stern, it is worth noting the presence of a spoiler (anti-wing for the hatchback) and a bumper with diffusers on the sides, which are also found only in the "charged" versions.
The A-Class sedan has a classic design for the latest cars of the German brand. Thus, the sedan and hatchback are equipped with dual multimedia and instrument panel screens. Below, on the central console are 3 branded deflectors, which, like the front panel with door cards, are complemented by LED lighting. The interior as a whole is replete with expensive finishing materials. And the seats, due to their well-thought-out configuration and extremely precise adjustment of positions, provide the maximum level of comfort.
