The 2021 Mercedes GLA is essentially a slightly larger A-Class hatchback. Therefore, the German crossover is equipped with the same 1.3- and 2-liter turbocharged engines. It is also combined with a subframe, which is isolated from the rest of the body with rubber gaskets that help smooth out road unevenness and increase ride comfort. The length of the German crossover is 4410 mm with a wheelbase of 2729 mm. Its width is 1834 mm, height - 1611 mm.

As standard, the car is equipped with a proprietary 1.33-liter turbocharged engine, in the development of which Renault engineers took part. The maximum output of this engine reaches 163 hp. with a torque of 250 N*m. This engine comes with a 7-speed preselective robotic gearbox. Slightly more expensive versions are available with a 2-liter turbocharged engine that develops up to 221 hp. power and 330 N*m of torque. There is also a similar robot, but with eight speeds.

The same 2-liter engine appears in the top modifications. However, it is complemented by twin turbocharging, which increases maximum output to 306 or 421 hp. and torque - up to 400 or 500 N*m.

Handling and off-road capabilities

Handling, as well as the off-road performance of the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA, largely depends on the type of version chosen. In different modifications, the settings of the suspension, transmission and steering mechanism change quite significantly. But in relation to operation on public roads, these parameters for the German model are approximately the same in all versions. The crossover, thanks to its compact size, precise steering mechanism and all-wheel drive, demonstrates excellent stability in different operating conditions. The car does not skid, in particular when entering a turn at high speed or while driving on an icy surface. The steering is soft and the suspension provides a smooth ride.

However, the German model is not designed for off-road driving. This feature is especially pronounced in modifications with a sports suspension, characterized by rigid shock absorbers. Even all-wheel drive, which prevents wheel slipping and evenly redistributes the generated traction between them, is designed to rather improve stability during operation on slippery asphalt. It is also worth noting the 154 mm ground clearance, which mainly limits the possibility of driving off the highway.

Design

The German model has a radiator grille with a voluminous pattern and a large corporate badge, characteristic of other Mercedes-Benz cars. On either side of it are rectangular lights with LEDs and rounded edges. The front bumper in versions with AMG styling is complemented by huge air intakes that occupy almost its entire area. There are red inserts on the rims and some other exterior parts, giving the car a more sporty look. The rear of the GLA is designed in the style of compact Mercedes-Benz hatchbacks. There are relatively narrow lights here, and the trunk door seems to be recessed into the body. This effect is ensured by the protruding rear bumper, flanked by diffusers.

The GLA's interior is designed in a typical Mercedes-Benz style with two 10.25-inch displays interconnected, a wide center console with three round air deflectors and a large transmission tunnel, almost completely devoid of physical keys. Their place is taken by a convenient multimedia joystick. Expensive materials are used in the interior decoration, and in versions with the AMG package, contrasting inserts appear in the interior, decorating the seats and other details. The rear row of seats, despite the compact size of the car, provide a relatively comfortable fit. Because of this, the luggage compartment volume is 435 liters.
