2022 Audi RS 3

The new generation of the Audi A3 family has received the most powerful RS variants. As in the previous generation, the Audi RS 3 can be either a five-door hatchback or a four-door sedan. Moreover, from the outside, the RS can no longer be confused with less powerful versions: a black “mask” that visually unites the radiator grille and headlights is included in the standard package.

Among other visual features of the RS versions, there are enlarged air intakes at the front, inflated wheel arches (the front track is 33 mm wider than that of the previous model), large exhaust pipes and 19-inch wheels. The sections of the running lights in the corners of the LED headlights are designed in the form of a checkered flag. And at the junction of the front fenders and doors, ventilation “gills” appeared, and this is not a sham: the air ducts are needed to remove heat from the front brakes.

Interior features include RS graphics for virtual instruments (there are several modes), seats with increased lateral support and sports decor. The RS steering wheel with suede braiding, zero mark and a separate button for quickly switching of the driving modes on the right spoke is offered for an extra charge.

The five-cylinder 2.5 TFSI turbo engine is the same, but with a new control system that works faster than the previous one. The power has not changed (400 hp), but the maximum torque has been increased from 480 to 500 Nm. The standard exhaust system has an electronically controlled valve that changes the exhaust sound depending on the selected driving mode. The gearbox is also the same - it is a seven-speed "robot" with two wet clutches. The main new feature is the all-wheel drive transmission with the RS Torque Splitter system. Instead of a simple clutch and center differential, individual onboard clutches are installed on the rear axle. Electronics can transfer up to 100% of the torque supplied to the rear axle to each of the rear wheels, controlling the thrust vector and creating additional turning moment.

That is, the Audi RS 3 follows in the footsteps of the hot hatches Ford Focus RS (it is no longer in production) and Mercedes-AMG A 45. Following their example, it even has a hooligan drift mode (hidden under the harmless name RS Torque Rear), in which the stabilization system is disabled, and the electronics transfers maximum traction to the rear axle. In addition to it, there are Comfort / Efficiency, Auto, Dynamic and track RS Performance modes, which differ in the distribution of traction between the axles and the degree of "arrogance". The chassis has been seriously modified compared to the A3 and S3 models. Other bearings, joints and front subframe, new wheel hubs and stabilizers are used. The negative camber of the front wheels has been increased by one degree, and the rear ones - by almost half a degree. The ground clearance is 25 mm less than the base model A3, and 10 mm less than the Audi S3. The front brakes are six-piston and have 375 mm diameter discs, while the rear axle has conventional floating calipers and 310 mm discs.

Among the options, as before, there is an adaptive suspension and carbon-ceramic brakes, the latter being 10 kg lighter than the basic steel ones, although the diameter of the front discs has been increased to 380 mm. The acceleration time to “hundreds”, compared to the previous generation cars, has decreased from 4.1 to 3.8 s. The maximum speed is limited to 250 km/h, but with the RS Dynamic package, the cutoff is shifted to 280 km/h, and with the simultaneous order of carbon-ceramic brakes - to 290 km/h.
