Full-size vans like the 2022 Ram ProMaster are designed for a wide range of jobs, so their capability and customization options are paramount. This Ram is available in 1500, 2500 and 3500 models with a cargo van, window van, chassis cab and cutaway body, and two available roof heights and three available wheelbase lengths. The Ford Transit and Mercedes-Benz Sprinter offer similar options, but they also offer all-wheel drive, higher towing rates and quieter cabins. The ProMaster is only available with front wheel drive and a single 6 hp V-276 powertrain. Although these characteristics limit its capabilities, it offers higher payload capacity than Ford and Mercedes. What's new in 2022?

The 2022 Ram ProMaster lineup will get a new powertrain and upgraded technology. The first is a nine-speed automatic gearbox that replaces the old six-speed unit. The latter includes a host of driver aids such as a 360-degree camera system, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, front parking sensors and more. Inside, the ProMaster has received significant changes, including an updated instrument panel and a newly available second-row seating package. In addition, there's a redesigned center stack with new HVAC controls, more charging ports, and a modern infotainment system. Gone is the aging 5.0-inch display, which is replaced by a standard 7.0-inch or optional 10.0-inch touchscreen. Both come standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto wireless connectivity, Amazon Alexa voice assistant and Wi-Fi hotspot. A charger for wireless devices is also recently available.

Engine, transmission and performance

All ProMaster vans are powered by a 3.6-liter V-6 engine producing 276 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque. A nine-speed automatic transmission sends power to the front wheels. The ProMaster can tow up to 6,910 pounds, but that's still less than competitors like the Transit (7,500 pounds). However, the Ram van makes up for this with a high payload capacity. It can hold up to 4,680 pounds, giving it a higher payload capacity than the Transit. When it comes to overall handling, the Ram ProMaster is noticeably less polished than many of its competitors. The steering is loose and numb, and competing vans provide a smoother ride.

Interior, comfort and cargo

ProMaster provides the driver with a wide view of the road with a wide viewing angle. The cabin looks more Spartan than competing Ford and Mercedes-Benz vans, but the overall design is attractive enough. While the interior materials are mostly made up of strong, durable plastics, the dashboard incorporates a wealth of modern technology. For example, a 7.0-inch customizable dashboard display and a wireless charger are available. The dashboard of the Ram van also features a large and easily accessible storage tray under the glove box. Those looking to carry more than a couple of people can opt for the Crew Van package, which includes a second row of seats that can seat up to three people. However, the ProMaster has a huge downside: road noise. The Ram just isn't as effective as some competitors at keeping traffic noise in the cabin.
