2022 Tesla Model 3: The leader among the best compact sedans

2022 Tesla Model 3 is the most affordable model from Tesla. At the same time, the characteristics of an electric car can impress even the most demanding drivers.

General impression

The Model 3 takes its rightful place both in the electric vehicle segment and in the compact sedan segment. The long range and affordable price alone would be enough to make this car attractive, but the exceptional performance and stylish minimalist interior only add to the appeal.

However, some buyers will not appreciate the massive central touchscreen. Almost every aspect of the car is controlled through this display, there are only a few real buttons in the cabin.

Design and interior of Tesla Model 3

Externally, the Model 3 has a streamlined shape with a high drag coefficient. In terms of size, the Tesla has the same dimensions as the BMW 3 Series. It is not for nothing that the Model 3 is compared with the top modification of the BMW M3 trio, Tesla even surpasses the famous BMW in dynamics.

Tesla is also distinguished by its panoramic roof, which passes into the ceiling, allowing the driver and all passengers, including second-row passengers, to enjoy an unusual sense of freedom in the cabin.

Inside, the Tesla Model 3 at first glance seems concise, without all these buttons familiar to drivers. All functions can be controlled via a tablet in the center console. At first it is unusual, but the controls are intuitive, so after an hour spent in the Tesla Model 3 salon, you get used to it. When you sit down after Tesla in the interior of any other car, it immediately seems that there are too many extra buttons, levers, and so on.

Performance and range

There are three variants of the Model 3: Standard Range Plus, Long Range and Performance. The entry-level Standard Range Plus models are equipped with a single rear engine and rear wheel drive, while the other two Model 3 models are dual engine and AWD. Standard Range cars run on a 54kWh battery, but if you choose one of the dual motor options, these models will get an 82kWh battery.

In terms of performance, Tesla claims 0-100 km/h in 5.3 seconds for the Standard Range Plus, 4.2 seconds for the Long Range and 3.1 seconds for the Model 3 Performance. Tests have shown that the Standard Range Plus and Long Range models accelerate slightly faster.

  • Standard Range Plus: 420 km
  • Long Range: 570 km
  • Performance: 510 km

Safety ratings and features

The Model 3 performs well in IIHS safety testing, earning a Top Safety Pick+ in 2021. The small Tesla sedan also received a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA, with the highest possible scores in all tests.

Each model includes front and rear automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert. For $10,000 or a monthly subscription fee, buyers can add a “full set of self-driving capabilities”—automatic lane change, parking assistance, vehicle assist, and autopilot navigation.

Cargo space and interior space

While the Model 3 doesn't offer as much interior space as the Model Y crossover or Tesla's larger Model S, there's still plenty of room. The Polestar 2 has a slight advantage over the Model 3 of 15 liters of cargo space, but the Tesla has more front and rear legroom.
