2022 Toyota Tundra
At the very end of September 2021, Toyota introduced a completely new full-size pickup truck called Tundra.
2022 Tundra is not a restyling of the previous model, which, by the way, lasted on the conveyor for a long 14 years, but a completely new, redesigned car.
Given the tasks that are set for such a large car, it remained a frame. But its power structure has completely changed. It is several times more torsionally rigid than its predecessor. All elements, without exception, now have a box section. They are thicker, almost twice as thick.
The Tundra suspension is a separate topic and deserves a special story. On the one hand, everything is almost the same as its competitors. The front double wishbone provides acceptable control. But there have been significant changes behind. The solid rear axle has not gone anywhere, but now it is attached to the frame not by means of springs. There are springs and shock absorbers there. Until recently, only the RAM 1500 had such a design.
The results of the new introductions to the body design give the new Tundra an impressive maximum towing capacity of up to 5,443 kg and a maximum payload of 880 kg.
And the TNGA-F platform made it possible to equip the new product with adaptive shock absorbers (Adaptive Variable Suspension) and added an optional air suspension (High, Low and Normal modes) to the rear of the pickup.
The ground clearance of this car has been increased by 28 millimeters. Rebound/compression control is now provided by Fox struts with remote reservoirs. The bottom is covered with powerful steel protection, and the stabilizers will be of reinforced design. The car will rest on the ground with special off-road Falken tires.
Now, regarding the overall dimensions. The length of the car is 5933 mm, which is 119 millimeters more than its predecessor. And this is with a standard double cabin and a short body. The pickup has also increased in width - 2037 mm. Ground clearance is 239 mm.
If we talk about engines, then the naturally aspirated V-shaped eight with a volume of 5.7 liters and a power of 381 horsepower will have to wave a hand. It did not fit into the strict standards for ecology and fuel consumption. But in its place, three engines appeared at once. These are the latest power units of the i-Force family. All of them are V-shaped six-cylinder and have the same volume of 3.5 liters. Version one is an atmospheric power unit with direct fuel injection. It has a capacity of 348 horsepower. Version two is a biturbo six with an output of 389 horsepower and a torque of 649 Nm. But, the most interesting, in my opinion, is the third version. This is a hybrid engine and it is called i-Force Max. It combines a twin-turbo engine and an electric motor. The output of this pair is already 437 horsepower. This version is capable of towing a trailer with a total weight of almost five and a half tons and has a maximum payload of 880 kg.
A very important detail, there are actually two boxes. For purely gasoline modifications, a ten-speed "automatic" is provided. But the hybrid is equipped with a rather tricky transmission. Between the engine and the torque converter, the engineers placed an electric motor, there is also an additional clutch, it is responsible for movement on electric traction or hybrid. The nickel-metal hydride battery itself is located under the rear seats.
As for the appearance, on the one hand, the front of the Tundra pickup is designed in the new-fangled "Toyota" style Technical muscle, although it was developed in California. Almost all new Toyotas look like this now.
On the one hand, the artists tried to preserve the brutality, on the other, to give the cabin a visual lightness.
By the way, the cabin itself is still made of ordinary stamped steel. But what about weight reduction? The creators decided to play around with materials a little here. If the cabin is ordinary, then the body itself is made of composite materials, and aluminum is used only as a stiffener.
However, the biggest changes have occurred in the interior. Everyone has long been accustomed to the fact that Toyota Tundra is such a stocky guy with a terribly archaic interior. But this is in the past. Only two basic versions have analog instruments, but starting with the Limited package, the instrument panel will become virtual (12.5 inches). The multimedia system in the base has an 8-inch screen, but in the older versions it is already a 14-inch high-resolution monitor.
