5 ways to stop changing the wiper blades too often

Category: Blog views: 862

It goes without saying that drivers should always rely on clear vision to avoid accidents. That is why windshields should be cleaned regularly by mechanical wipers. However, windshield wipers have their limits, too. The constant rhythmic motion and environmental obstructions will take a toll on the wipers in the long run.

Nevertheless, the full importance of the wipers can only be understood when they stop cleaning the glass normally. It is very unpleasant to hear this squeaking and look at the world through divorce strips. Wiper blades are consumables requiring regular replacement. The interval between replacements directly depends on how the owner of the car uses cleaners. Let’s see how to increase this interval.

1. Dry glass

Laziness is the cause of many problems. One of these may be the rapid wear of the wiper blades. It is better to wipe dried dirt and stains with a damp cloth. If you regularly do this with the help of wipers, their lifespan will be significantly reduced.

2. Frozen wipers

Tearing off the frozen wipers in a frosty morning, you will almost certainly damage them. This should be done as carefully as possible, and it is best to pour them with warm water, not boiling water, before the procedure itself. If you pour boiling water, then due to the temperature transfer, the windshield may burst.

Note: If the wipers are not frozen, and the glass is covered with ice, then you should not turn them on. Ice can severely damage brushes.

3. Works of a wide profile

And again about laziness. The task of the wipers is to clean the glass of moisture. Use special scrapers or a rag to clean other contaminants such as ice, leaves, or bird droppings. Otherwise, the brushes will not last long.

4. Cracks in the glass

Cracks in the windshield are a common thing on the roads. One small crack in the rest zone causes the stains on the windshield. This is because the sharp edge of the crack scratches the brush and very quickly renders it unusable.

5. Cleaning the deposition

Wiper blades are designed to clean the windshield, but they themselves need to be cleaned from time to time. Dirt gathers there, the brushes tan and begin to wear out very much. Therefore, in the rainy season they need to be regularly cleaned with a rag, wetting it with water or “antifreeze”.

How often to replace windshield wipers

Since windshield wipers are composed of several components, we cannot give an exact answer regarding the frequency of maintenance. What we are going to do instead is to discuss three major components. Here are the answers on how often we should replace windshield wipers according to their three main parts:

Blades

It is safe to say that the blades are the most important parts of windshield wipers. These components can remove most substances or elements from the windshield such as dirt, ice, snow and rain. However, they belong to the least durable components of cars.

When windshield wiper blades deteriorate, they crack, shred and get loose. They are even more vulnerable to cracking if they are exposed during winter. Another sign of deterioration is streaking and uneven wiping. Failing blades also produce sounds. Once activated, they may chatter or squeak.

The average lifespan of windshield wiper blades is six months to one year.

Arms

Windshield wiper blades cannot serve their purpose if they cannot move. What makes them move is their special arms. These arms are usually made of metal, so they are far more durable than rubber blades. They can even outlast your car.

However, there are certain symptoms that may tell you that your windshield wiper arms need early replacement. Sometimes, the reason why a blade streaks your windshield and produces chattering sounds is a defective arm. Other signs include the blades not touching the windshield or ultimately not moving at all.

Motor

The arms of windshield wipers will never move without a motor. Like the arms, the  wipers motor can also last longer than a car. However, like any other car component, it can deteriorate due to certain factors. Daily use can expose it to moisture and heat, a bad combination for metal objects.
