7th generation BMW 5-Series 2020-2021 as the standard for mid-range sedans

Every new BMW is launched with huge expectations, and the 2021 BMW 5-Series is no exception. The latest “five” was radically revised in 2017, and although the 2021 model is not a full-fledged novelty, it introduced a number of interesting ideas to improve the “success formula”.

While the current 5 Series features a wide range of fast, efficient engines and a comfortable ride, its spirit remains the same. Only minor adjustments have been made to give the prestigious car a bit of extra styling.

Exterior styling of the 7th generation BMW 5-Series

In 2017, BMW released the current generation of the 5 Series to stay on par with the A6 and E-Class. Carefully thought-out design is a must in this class.

The model was optically focused on its luxurious "big brother" of the 7th Series, and also adopted many technical solutions from it. In BMW tradition, the car regularly receives a facelift to look and feel fresh.

As for the exterior details, for the 2021 model year, BMW stylists have revised the grille, making it taller and wider, as well as the headlights and exhaust pipes. The head optics received a flatter design with special lighting graphics - more angular than its predecessor, and more original than the 7 or 8 series.

In addition, the new 5 Series is about an inch longer (27mm for the sedan, 21mm for the versatile Kombi, both stretching to 4.96m). The width and height are almost the same for both - 186/148 cm for the first, 186/149 for the second.

Fortunately, the changes are not as massive as those made in the 7th series. "Five" is beautiful in its current form. It's still a premium car, luxurious, sleek and sporty. It can be dyed in various shades of white, black, blue and silver; the most aggressive is the top-end M550i xDrive in blood red.

Clearance is 141 mm.

Interior

The premium sophistication of the 2021 BMW 5-Series is backed by one of the most beautiful cabins in the segment. Visually, it does not differ much from the previous one. At our disposal, there is the same spacious cabin, reminiscent of the office of a statesman - comfortable and highly functional. Several updates give it freshness:

  • the central touch screen is enlarged (12.3 inches instead of the previous 10.25);
  • improved navigation maps;
  • added display of data about surrounding vehicles on the information screen in front of the driver;
  • the standard faux-leather Sensatec upholstery is perforated this year, so look out for seat ventilation popping up in the options list along with breathable trim.

With particular attention, BMW approaches interior space and comfort. The driver and his guests (including those sitting in the back) are provided with everything from easy access to the inside through wide-opening doors to customizable cozy seats and legroom at the level of the larger 7 Series. The pilot, of course, gets a wide range of seat and steering wheel adjustments.

You expect an executive car to be roomy and comfortable - and the 5 Series won't disappoint you. There's enough room for even tall people to stretch out in comfort, and the wide rear seat can easily accommodate three adults.

The trunk of the sedan is very roomy - 520 liters, but the five-door station wagon is more practical: it has five doors, and storage grows from 560 to 1700 liters after the second row of seats is folded down.

If you decide to use any of the hybrid versions, you will have to sacrifice part of the cargo area in favor of batteries. However, it is well shaped in all versions, with a wide opening, a couple of handy recesses on the sides and a small hidden area under the floor.

The split/fold rear row contributes to versatility, though you will need to pay extra for a through-loading system.

Engines and driving of 2020-2021 BMW 5-Series

The Bavarian automaker offers buyers a choice between several transmissions. Another plus is that it is possible to get all-wheel drive instead of the traditional rear.

The initial versions are - 520i (184 hp) and 520d (190), but then the lineup is different. The 530i model is boosted to 252 “horses”, and the 530d - to 286. A diesel modification 540d appears with a three-liter biturbo engine generating 340 hp/700 Nm (previously it was 320 hp/680 Nm). But the petrol 540i, on the contrary, was slightly weakened (up to 333 hp instead of the previous 340, but the torque is the same - 450 Nm). At the top of the model pyramid, there is the 530-horsepower all-wheel drive M550i xDrive with a 4.4-liter turbocharged V8. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds - faster than the pre-styling 462-horsepower analogue.
