ALFA ROMEO ENTERED THE SUV SEGMENT WITH THE 2018 STELVIO CROSSOVER

As part of the auto show in Los Angeles, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio crossover premiered in 2017. With this car, the brand was opening up a previously unexplored SUV segment. At the auto show, the company presented to the public a 505-horsepower extreme modification with the prefix Quadrifoglio Verde in the name.

The SUV is based on the Giorgio modular architecture, which also serves as the basis for the Giulia sedan. The length, width and height of the Stelvio are 4.68 m, 2.18 m and 1.65 m respectively. The developers have achieved an ideal weight ratio along the axles of 50 to 50.

Alfa Romeo’s “first-born SUV” is designed in the style of the brand’s latest new products. The Stelvio has got a signature triangular grille, narrow arrow-shaped LED optics and an aggressive front bumper with large air intakes.

The interior of the top-end version features sports seats and a steering wheel with contrasting red stitching, and multimedia with a 6.5-inch display. As an option, the crossover is offered to be equipped with an 8.8-inch display, Harman Kardon acoustics with 14 speakers and a set of active safety systems.

Alfa Romeo began to use innovative materials for interior trim. During a recent presentation, representatives of the Italian company said that all new and updated models of the manufacturer will be produced under strict quality control of finishing materials. As an example, the updated Giulia and Quadrifoglio models were given, in the process of finishing the seats of which Alcantara is used.

The manufacturer reports that the use of Alcantara not only increases the level of comfort for the driver and passengers and extends the life of the interior without loss of external characteristics. This material also makes it possible to increase the breathability of the seats and create the desired level of ventilation.

The initial and mid-range versions are equipped with a 280-horsepower (306 Nm) 2-liter gasoline turbo engine, thanks to which the car can accelerate to 231 km/h.

In turn, the Italians placed a 510-horsepower (600 Nm) 2.9-liter twin-turbo six under the hood of the top-end Stelvio. This unit makes the crossover the most “driver-friendly” in its segment. The Stelvio takes 3.9 seconds to accelerate to 96 km/h. For comparison, the Porsche Macan meets this standard in 4.4 seconds. The Stelvio has more and a maximum speed of 285 versus 272 km per hour for the Macan.

All engines are coupled with an all-wheel drive system and an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission that changes gears in just a hundred milliseconds.

Safety

Active safety is represented by blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning and forward collision warning systems as part of the Driver Assistance Static and Driver Assistance Dynamic Plus packages. The Stelvio is also complete with frontal, side impact, and side curtain air bags as standard.

The Alfa Romeo Stelvio has earned a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating.
