BMW 2 Gran Coupe 2020, which appeared in the BMW model line last fall and received the factory designation F44, was created by Bavarian designers in defiance of sworn competitors from Mercedes, who continue to successfully sell their regularly updated CLA-class coupes.

BMW 2 Gran Coupe 2020 model year will be available in four main trim levels so far:

  • 218i - equipped with a turbocharged 1.5-liter 140-horsepower (220-230 Nm) unit, front-wheel drive, as well as a six-speed manual or seven-band robotic "box".
  • 228i xDrive - 2.0 engine with a capacity of 231 hp (350 Nm) + all-wheel drive + 8-speed "automatic" (modification for the American market).
  • 220d - front-wheel drive, 2.0-liter diesel engine (190 hp, 400 Nm) and 8-automatic transmission (modification for Europe).
  • M235i xDrive - an all-wheel drive version with a 2.0 engine, 306 hp, 450 Nm, as well as an M Sport design package that changes the "plastic" of air intakes and radiator grilles, as well as giving access to many other M-improvements, including lowered suspension, reinforced brakes, etc.

The debate about whether BMW is losing its edge has been going on for a long time. The company's modern products, although they remain fast and agile, are at the same time becoming softer and more liberal. And if these changes are disturbing when we talk about M3 or M5, is it necessarily bad for more "mundane" models? Such as the BMW 228i xDrive.

The new "two" clearly benefits from the latest BMW design changes, it is wider and more "muscular" than the 1st series, and in general, the entry-level coupe now perfectly conveys the premium aesthetics of older comrades.

Exterior

BMW 2 has a thoroughbred appearance with large "nostrils" and other air intakes adjacent to them, through which air enters the engine compartment.

The formidable "muzzle" is decorated with large LED headlights and a snub-nosed hood. The coupe-like roof makes the sedan look like a liftback, but frameless doors and a small trunk lid with a large protrusion in the form of a spoiler give the car the appearance of a real "big coupe".

Alloy wheels, of which the Bavarians offered 4 types at once, will be able to significantly influence the design of the BMW 2 series Grand Coupe 2020. Also, the "casting" can have a diameter of 16 to 19 inches.

Interior

The interior of the BMW 2 migrated from the "one", which left its mark on the varieties of equipment.

Cheap versions will be equipped with an analog "instrument panel" with a 5.1-inch on-board computer screen and a media complex with an 8.8-inch touchscreen. The most expensive coupes will receive paired displays of 10.25 inches each and a system projecting basic data onto the windshield.

Optionally, on the BMW 2 series, it is proposed to install an adaptive cruise, a leather interior, a parking attendant, a media system control system using gestures, and so on.

The upper part of the center console is still reserved for the iDrive system, and the lower part for climate control and audio. Again very similar to the 1st series, but the performance has become noticeably better. High-quality finishing materials, accents of polished aluminum, while black or wood will also be available.

This car is equipped with a Sport Line package, which includes a thick steering wheel, sheathed in embossed leather with contrasting red stitching. Sports seats with a rich selection of adjustments are neat and provide the necessary support.

Engine

Here, a two-liter turbo engine with a capacity of 240 hp is standard for any BMW with "28i" in the name, although for some reason there is a little less torque than in those that are in the fifth series and X3.

Turning the engine is fun and pleasant, all-wheel drive feels very good here. From the start, it presses into the seats, and the exhaust system can deceive the ignorant that there are only four cylinders under the hood. And not just passers-by — the 228i uses sound design technology to recreate engine noise through speakers.

The car is best controlled in sports mode. It provides a sharper throttle response than the standard position, which is quite sluggish for a 2.0 engine. Another plus from the "sport" is a faster gear shift, switching on the step-down occurs instantly and requires less gas to reduce the shock load.

This engine paired with an eight-speed gearbox for uses a little more than 10 liters per 100 kilometers in the city and a pretty impressive 7 liters on the highway. In addition to this, there is a special Eco Pro mode, which is an excellent assistant in saving fuel.
