BMW i Vision Dee unveiled — a concept car that can literally change color
The Bavarian automaker BMW has unveiled a couple of unusual concept cars that react to the mood of their owner, which can change color or shape. The company called it a "digital emotional experience". The prototypes have a similar body design and even a common name - BMW i Vision Dee, where Dee stands for Digital Emotional Experience. The presentation took place at CES 2023, which took place these days in Las Vegas.

The first of the presented samples is capable of completely changing color, while, unlike last year's BMW "chameleon", the current one is available with a full palette of 32 different colors, and the body is divided into 240 independently painted segments, including rims.
The second concept goes even further - it can physically change parts of the body such as the area around the headlights and the grille, creating a semblance of a human face that expresses various emotions, such as happiness, concentration or annoyance.
Everything you need to know about the latest BMW i Vision Dee concept - the car listens, reacts, speaks and changes colors. It's a minimalist, high-performance electric sedan that makes heavy use of digital features such as augmented reality and voice-controlled virtual assistants.
The automaker showed a prototype car, the body of which was created using electronic paper (e-ink).
The company's engineers have refined the electronic paper technology for flexible vehicle color management. The ePaper film is applied to the bodywork and can display up to 32 different colors. The case is divided into 240 segments, each of which is covered with a separate "display" and can be changed independently of the others. This allows you to generate an almost infinite number of templates and change them within seconds, the company notes.
In addition to the bright body, BMW has developed a new augmented reality system that turns the entire surface of the windshield into a huge screen. Using gauges on the dashboard, drivers can customize how much digital content they want to see on the head-up display. The choices range from driving information and mobile device data to full immersive virtual reality experiences. It is noted that from 2025 this innovation will be available in NEUE KLASSE models, the electric vehicles of the future that the automaker is developing.
The contents of the projection display can be controlled from the dashboard, which, in turn, is also a projection. The user will be able to choose one of five different levels of presentation of digital content, from the most basic, which includes only the basic functionality, to a full-fledged virtual world that completely replaces the picture from the outside. It is logical to assume that the latter will not be intended for use on the move.

Like last year's concept from the German auto giant, the i Vision Dee is a full-fledged sedan, not an SUV, because "the sedan remains the backbone of the BMW brand," the manufacturer said in a statement.
BMW is calling the i Vision Dee "another milestone on the road to Neune Klasse", its future electric vehicle platform. At the same time, a number of innovations can find their application in future models.
