The Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat never lets you forget who's really in control
The Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat never lets you forget who's really in control
These powerful Dodge Challengers come in two flavors: cool and even cooler. The rugged SRT 392 is powered by a 485-horsepower Hemi V-8, while the vaunted SRT Hellcat features a 707-hp supercharged Hemi V-8. Both send power to the rear wheels through a standard six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission. The Hellcat Widebody has a distinct look thanks to flared fenders and wider wheels and tires. These crazy Challengers provide exceptional comfort with a spacious interior and a host of standard features. While the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 and Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 are more talented on the race track, the devilish Dodges evoke nostalgia and unleash our inner criminals.
What's new in 2018?
2018 Hellcats receive updated grilles and fender badges, as well as new Air-Catcher headlights with illuminated Hellcat logos. The options list now includes Matte Vapor wheel trim, dual metal stripes, Demonic Red Laguna seats and a new red dash badge. The SRT 392 is largely unchanged, but 20-inch Brass Monkey wheels are now optional. The new Hellcat Widebody features flared fenders and wider 20-inch wheels; an electric power steering system replaces the hydraulic setup on the regular model. The lineup adds F8 Green and IndiGO Blue exterior colors.
Engine, transmission and performance
The mad scientists at the Dodge SRT lab have created a tire-smoking monster based on the 707-horsepower Challenger SRT Hellcat. And while the SRT 392 only has 485 hp, even that will turn the rear tires into billowing smoke faster than anyone can ask, "Does this thing have a Hemi?" The new Hellcat Widebody is available with the same powertrains as its slimmer namesake. High power is complemented by sufficient torque support. The SRT 392 makes 475 pound-feet from its 6.4-liter V-8, while the supercharged 6.2-liter Hellcat engine has 650. The standard six-speed manual transmission is a lot of fun, but the clutch pedal is stiff and the throw is long. The eight-speed automatic transmission can shift lightning fast and still be fun to drive. Both Challengers feature SRT performance pages that can be customized on the 8.4-inch touchscreen. Along with changes to the engine, transmission, steering and traction control, the system can change the settings of the adaptive dampers in three modes: Auto, Sport or Track.
Interior, comfort and cargo
The Challenger's interior has been redesigned for the 2015 model year with a driver-focused layout, simple switchgear and better materials. SRT twins have standard leather trim, unique badging, and heated and ventilated front seats. Despite the roomy interior, the plastic looks poor quality, and rear visibility leaves much to be desired. The instrument panel features a 7.0-inch display with white dials for the SRT 392 and red dials for the Hellcat. Every Challenger has wide front seats with decent lateral support. These comfortable buckets fit all body sizes and are great for long trips. The Challenger's generous size allows for a large trunk that can accommodate more carry-on luggage than its competitors. It's not as good at storing small items as the Shelby GT350, but it still offers plenty of storage space.
Infotainment and connectivity
All SRT models come with Chrysler's Uconnect infotainment system, which is easy to use and loaded with features. These include navigation, stereo, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The standard 8.4-inch touchscreen is large and has icons you can easily select with your finger, as well as volume and settings controls for quickly adjusting stereo sound. The standard Harman/Kardon sound system produces 900 watts through 18 speakers. While the navigation is quick to respond to input via the large on-screen keyboard, the map graphics look dated and cartoonish.
