How to reduce fuel consumption?

Category: Blog views: 1041

It is fuel costs that are the main item of expenditure among car owners. Every year the price of gasoline and diesel fuel increases, so many car owners are thinking about possible ways to save and reduce fuel consumption. We offer you the simplest recommendations on how to reduce fuel consumption in a car.

Use the right tires with a narrow tread

Each car has its own documentation, where the requirements for wheel dimensions and tire pressure are described in detail. Many car owners ignore such recommendations, which invariably leads to a significant increase in fuel consumption of the car. It is well known that with a smaller width of the tire tread, the movement is more efficient, and the rolling resistance is lower. Accordingly, the car will spend less fuel on the same trip, which reduces the cost of car ownership.

Move as smoothly as possible

Often indicators of fuel consumption of the car will depend on the driving style of the car owner. If the driver starts abruptly, preferring to move at the maximum speed, this leads to increased fuel consumption. At the same time, all the components of the car suffer, which leads to frequent breakdowns and the need for costly repairs.

To save fuel, it is necessary to choose the speed mode correctly, while trying to accelerate as smoothly as possible, avoiding sudden skidding and emergency braking. If the car is equipped with a manual gearbox, then a so-called coasting should be used. Even such simple rules will save 2-3 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers.

The motor should be properly calibrated

Many modern cars are equipped with automatic control systems that monitor the volume of the fuel mixture that enters the cylinders. It is not uncommon for such engine control units to be calibrated incorrectly, which leads to various kinds of problems, including increased fuel consumption. If you want to save a few liters of gasoline or diesel fuel, you should regularly visit the service, perform diagnostics of the power unit and, if necessary, calibrate the engine correctly.

Performing such a calibration will not only improve fuel efficiency, but also will make cars more squat, dynamic and powerful. At the same time, fuel system failures that occur due to over-enriched fuel are eliminated. Such a calibration is not difficult, so it will be coped in most workshops. The cost of such work is not too high, whereas its effectiveness and the need to perform are beyond doubt.

Close the windows and the sunroof

In summer, in hot weather we often drive with open windows and sunroof. Such a trifle can lead to an increase in fuel consumption per liter or a half per 100 kilometers. Opened windows significantly worsen the performance of aerodynamic drag; therefore the engine of the car requires more power to overcome the increased air resistance. As a result, increased consumption of gasoline or diesel appears. It is extremely simple to avoid this. At high speeds, always close the windows and the sunroof, which will keep the aerodynamic drag index at the original level, and you can save fuel.

Use air conditioning properly

Today, many cars are equipped with air conditioning and climate control systems, which are responsible for cooling the cabin in the summer heat. Indeed, the use of such systems is extremely convenient and allows you to increase the comfort of using the car. However, air conditioning takes about 15% of engine power. Consequently, we need to keep the engine at higher speeds, which leads to an increase in fuel consumption. In the summer heat, the extra consumption of gasoline only because of the constantly operating air conditioner can be 2-3 liters. That is why the car owner should use the air conditioning only when there is an urgent need, which will reduce the cost of operating the car.
