Maserati Ghibli
Maserati Ghibli is an E-class sports car of the Italian brand Maserati, owned by the Italian-American concern Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. It has been produced since 1967 in the "coupe" and "sedan" bodies. Drive — rear or full. In 2021, the third generation of a magnificent sedan could be purchased on the Israeli market after the restyling of 2020.
First generation
It was produced from 1967 to 1973. The first Ghibli, demonstrated at the Turin Motor Show, was developed by the very young, but already famous, designer Giorgetto Giugiaro. The design of the two-door coupe was really quite extraordinary, some even called it the most beautiful car from Maserati. And the new model got its name in honor of the hurricane South American wind. In addition to the coupe, the Spyder C model was released with an open body, moreover, it was possible to order a hard top or a folding soft top.
Second generation
It was produced from 1992 to 1998. In 1992, the name "Ghibli" returned. The new rear-wheel drive coupe was equipped with 6-cylinder engines with dual turbocharging: a 2-liter with a capacity of 310 hp for the European market or a 2.8-liter with a capacity of 288 hp for other countries. Transmissions — manual or automatic, 4-speed.
After the 1994 modernization, the second Ghibli received an updated interior, electronically controlled suspension and ABS. In 1995, a Cup version with a 2-liter engine boosted to 355 forces was released in a circulation of several dozen cars. In 1997, this model was replaced by the Maserati 3200 GT. By this point, 2,380 Ghibli coupes had been produced.
Third generation
It has been produced since 2013 to the present day, having been restyled twice — in 2016 and in 2020. Maserati announced its intentions to release a new Ghibli sedan back in 2008. And a few years after joining Fiat Chrysler, Maserati announced that the new sedan will be built on the basis of the Chrysler 300 and will be equipped with diesel and gasoline engines and a gearbox from ZF. Officially, the third generation Ghibli was presented at the 2013 Shanghai Auto Show. The third Maserati Ghibli is a car for the driver. This is evidenced not only by the honed handling, but also by the rear seat, on which the passengers' knees rest against the backs of the front seats, and their heads against the ceiling.
The Italians do not hide that they borrowed a lot from competitors, including the rear 5-lever suspension, copied from the Mercedes E-class W 212 series. There may be differences in the front axle. So, in the case of all-wheel drive, two wishbones are installed in the front, and in the rear — a MacPherson with one a-shaped wishbone. Maserati claims that even with rear-wheel drive, the correctly tuned Ghibli suspension allows you to realize almost all the engine torque, yielding only 0.2 seconds in acceleration to the all-wheel drive version, which was born solely due to the demand of marketers.
The third generation was represented by several versions: Ghibli, Ghibli S, Ghibli SQ4 and Ghibli Diesel. The first three were equipped with a gasoline 6-cylinder 3-liter 24-valve turbocharged engine based on Chrysler's Pentastar and direct fuel injection into the combustion chamber. Its power in the first modification is 330 hp (500 Nm), in the rest - 410 hp (550 Nm). The Ghibli Diesel also has a 6-cylinder engine of the same volume under the hood, but as the name implies — a diesel engine with a capacity of 275 hp (570 Nm) borrowed from the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Restyling of 2016
The updated Ghibli has not changed outwardly. Two new versions are offered for the 4-door sedan - Luxury and Sport. The first is distinguished by an abundance of chrome, as well as leather and wood interior trim, and the second boasts interior details made of carbon fiber and aluminum.
The new 2016 model year Maserati Ghibli is a five-seat premium sports sedan. As for the platform, it received a somewhat unusual layout. The engine stands longitudinally in front on a massive stretcher, an independent suspension on double wishbones is attached to it. From behind, the manufacturer went for a little trick. Thanks to cooperation with DaimlerChrysler, engineers managed to get a rear suspension like the Mercedes models. It has two diagonal and three wishbones, also connecting to the subframe. Helical springs and adaptive Skyhook racks, manufactured by Sachs, are installed in a circle. Under the influence of an electromagnetic field, they are able to change the stiffness of shock absorbers.
Restyling 2020
In 2020, the third generation of the Maserati Ghibli underwent another, second facelift. The updated models are distinguished by a radiator grille with different vertical bars, additional chrome or glossy black decor, depending on the design, and rear LED lights. There are new things in the salon. The Ghibli 2020 has a 10.1-inch diagonal central display inside instead of 8.4 with a higher resolution, an improved picture and a redesigned interface based on the Android operating system. The updated car received a second-level autopilot, with which it can move independently on any roads with good markings at speeds up to 145 km/h. It is also possible to control the functions of the car using a mobile application. But most importantly, a hybrid version appeared - the Ghibli Hybrid and the powerful Ghibli Trofeo, equipped with a V-shaped 8-cylinder turbo engine with a volume of 3.8 liters with a capacity of 580 hp, capable of delivering 326 km/h and accelerating to the first hundred in 4.5 seconds.
