Mazda 3 has become more powerful and more economical

The Japanese brand has updated the Mazda 3 hatchback and sedan for the American market. It manages to combine an upscale interior with excellent driving dynamics at a price that remains very competitive with contemporaries like the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla.

The car has received a new Ceramic Metallic body color and an enlarged multimedia system screen.

Also the model has added the remote engine start from a smartphone application, improved electronic assistants that more accurately recognize obstacles and pedestrians, an Inattentive Warning driver monitoring function and an automatic call to a security company in the event of an alarm.

The main innovation is the naturally aspirated Skyactiv-G 2.5, which has become more powerful and more economical and now produces 195 horsepower, consuming 8.4 liters of fuel per hundred kilometers in the city.

More powerful and more economical

Mazda 3 in the version for the United States has become more powerful and more economical. True, this only applies to modifications with the naturally aspirated Skyactiv-G 2.5. Such cars now develop 195 horsepower and 252 Nm of torque, that is, five more horsepower than before. In addition, they optimized the operation of the cylinder deactivation system, which reduced consumption to 8.4 liters per 100 kilometers in the city and to 6.4 on the highway.

For the Japanese market, a hybrid version will be available: e-SkyActiv-G 2.0 (156 hp, 199 Nm) and a version with diesel engine Skyactiv-D 1.8 (130 hp, 270 Nm), and turbocharged e-Skyactiv X (190 hp, 240 Nm). A choice of manual or automatic gearboxes will be offered. The Mazda 3 can have front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

Mazda 3 interior and car technology

The interior just makes you say, "Wow!" The Toyota Corolla or Hyundai Elantra, which are actually quite nice, look and feel like they should cost significantly less—especially when comparing the upper trim levels.

However, whatever Mazda 3 trim level you're considering, the key to its wow factor is the way Mazda's design eliminates visual clutter by reducing the number of switches and effectively hiding air vents and door handles. She just looks special. Honda comes close with the new Civic, but the Mazda 3's interior is still nicer.

It's also functional. The steering wheel, which looks sensational, is a pleasure to hold in your hands. There's plenty of space in the center console, and Mazda's tech interface, which lagged behind rivals due to key usability issues, has been spruced up.

The instrument screen is large and clearly visible. Its control knob is large, unlike BMW's iDrive, and is ergonomically located on the center console. It's not a touchscreen, however, as Mazda engineers decided that searching for touch control icons could be distracting.

Front passengers will have space on par with compact competitors, and the cabin will be quite comfortable thanks to good seats and seating position. The rear seat, on the other hand, has the least legroom in the segment.

The sedan's trunk is useful and was able to accommodate all six suitcases in our luggage test, but it must be said that its 13.2 cubic feet of space is inferior to the surprisingly capacious trunks of the Honda Civic and Hyundai Elantra. The Mazda 3 Hatchback's cargo space increases to 20.1 cubic feet, but that figure is deceiving as it includes a lot of roof space that isn't particularly useful.
