New Audi A5 convertible has become stronger and lighter

Category: Blog views: 330

The formation of the second generation Audi A5 family is going according to plan - after the coupe and five-door hatchback, a convertible is presented. There were no surprises - the recipe of the previous model was carefully preserved: the “five” still has a multi-layer fabric roof, which made it possible to preserve the dynamic silhouette of the original coupe. The top folding process is fully automated and takes the same 15 seconds as the previous model. The roof rises in 18 seconds, both operations can be performed at speeds of up to 50 km/h. The maximum trunk volume is the same, 380 liters, and an electric lid is already included in the basic configuration.

Exterior

The only unusual feature in the exterior is the third brake light: it is elegantly integrated into the belt molding that surrounds the interior. The new convertible is 47 mm longer than its predecessor (now 4673 mm), and the wheelbase has grown by 14 mm, to 2765 mm.

Interior

The entire increase came in the interior: coupled with “thinner” seats, the distance between the rows was increased by 18 mm. In addition, the width of the cabin at the shoulders of the front passengers has been increased by 26 mm.

However, the interior is designed without surprises and is exactly the same as the A5 coupe and the A4 family: there is the same front panel with a single line of ventilation deflectors, a rigidly fixed central display of the media system and an optional screen instead of the instrument cluster (12.3 inches diagonal). Of course, the entire extensive range of electronics has migrated to the convertible, including active safety systems, a wireless charger for smartphones, a Wi-Fi transmitter and a built-in eSIM module. And front seat belts with built-in microphones have been developed specifically for the convertible: so that voice commands to the media system or talking over the speakerphone do not create problems even when driving with the top open.

Rear passengers have heated seats and a separate heating fan, the speed of which can be adjusted, although the temperature of the supplied air is the same as in the front. The backs of the rear seats fold down to transport long items, but the opening in the trunk is small, because powerful aluminum arches are also hidden behind the rear seats, which shoot upward in the event of a rollover.

Characteristics

The MLB Evo platform has a longitudinal engine, electric power steering, a double-wishbone front suspension and a five-link rear suspension (for an additional fee, with electronically controlled shock absorbers). There is almost no aluminum in the body structure, but targeted optimization of components and assemblies made it possible to gain up to 40 kg of curb weight, while torsional rigidity increased by 40% compared to the previous model! By the way, after the change of generations, the coupe “lost weight” by 60 kg, but in the case of the convertible, a more modest diet is due to additional reinforcement of the body.

The open version offers the same five “main” engines as the coupe. These are a petrol turbo-four 2.0 TFSI (190 or 252 hp), a four-cylinder diesel 2.0 TDI (190 hp) and a V6 3.0 TDI engine in two boost levels (218 or 286 hp). Transmissions include a six-speed manual (for younger versions), a seven-speed S tronic transmission, and the most powerful diesel version has a traditional eight-speed automatic transmission.

Low-power versions have front-wheel drive, all-wheel drive now has two transmissions. The traditional scheme with a Torsen center differential (it divides the input torque in a ratio of 40:60 in favor of the rear axle) remains only on two-pedal cars, and modifications with “mechanics” are equipped with a quattro ultra transmission - with two clutches driving the rear wheels.

The “charged” version of the Audi S5 Sportback Cabriolet with a V6 3.0 TFSI turbo engine (354 hp) can accelerate to 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds - 0.4 seconds slower than a similar coupe, but 0.3 seconds faster than the previous model with a compressor engine.
