New big Volkswagen Atlas 2021

Atlas is the largest car Volkswagen has ever offered. With a length of 5.04 meters, the seven-seater SUV is also significantly more massive than the Touareg, which is the largest European VW with a length of 4.88 meters.

For 2021, Atlas received some design and interior changes. Absolutely average design and equally average speed do not cause negative emotions, and we congratulate the Atlas on its advanced technological features and spacious interior. But owners of previous VW models will be dissatisfied with the disappointingly cheap interior and unremarkable exterior.

Design

The 2021 VW Atlas looks quite acceptable, especially after they removed the boxy front end as part of the facelift, which made the car look heavy and clunky. A sleeker grille, slanted headlights and an almost horizontal hood give the Atlas a more German look. The side and rear views remained virtually unchanged, only the taillights received a subtle alteration.

Back when the Atlas debuted in 2018, we didn’t like its cabin and were very hopeful that the big SUV model update would bring improvements. Unfortunately, it is not. There is still a lot of hard plastic in the Atlas cabin.

Anything below the waistline feels especially cheap and annoying thanks to the sharp-edged plastic trim. Indeed, any competitor, such as the Ford Explorer, is better in this regard.

Technically, the interior knows how to impress, with a well-known good infotainment system and a commendable digital instrument display. The perforated leatherette upholstery also feels premium.

Comfort

There is more than enough space in front to feel completely comfortable during long trips. However, heated soft seats do not provide sufficient comfort.

The second row seats move. In their extreme forward position, there is enough space for children and teenagers. The rise of the third row deserves high praise, thanks to which even adults can sit with sufficient dignity and comfort. Legroom and headroom in all seats is acceptable. However, if you plan to carry seven people more often, it can be a bit cramped in the shoulders on a long trip. In this case, a minivan may be the best choice.

With a wheelbase of 2.98 meters and passenger space of 4,360 liters, the Atlas outperforms vehicles such as the Explorer, Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander in terms of roominess. Only the Chevrolet Traverse, Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride offer a bit more.

The Atlas SEL comes standard with a digital cockpit and familiar infotainment system. Wireless charging of smartphones is, of course, a nice addition.

Performance

Volkswagen offers the 2021 Atlas with two powertrains. The base engine is a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four with 240 hp and 350 Nm, which is also very capable of this big car. An eight-speed automatic transmission sends power to all four wheels. With a power of 280 hp and 360 Nm, the Atlas feels powerful enough in most situations.

Unlike the Volkswagens of yesteryear, the Atlas isn't as strong at high speeds as we'd like. Kia Telluride or Hyundai Palisade, for example, feel somehow better.

As with many other areas, there's nothing wrong with the way the Atlas moves - it'll get you and your family home safe and sound - but it doesn't feel particularly athletic or overly dignified. One positive is the excellent brake feel: the pedal is firm yet easy to control.

Safety

Volkswagen Front Assist is standard on every Atlas. It includes forward collision warning, pedestrian detection and emergency braking assistance. The mid-range SE also offers a technology package with adaptive cruise control, which is complemented by lane departure warning and congestion assist on the SEL.
