New Cadillac Escalade: luxury and gigantomania

One of the most gigantic production cars of our time has changed generation. Now it has even more innovation, with some of which it became the first in the world. But traditions do not give up! Will the 2020 Cadillac Escalade satisfy buyers with opposing value systems?

The introduction of the latest generation of full-size SUVs from General Motors began in December with the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban. It was obvious that the Cadillac Escalade will receive more innovations than the “ordinary” Chevrolet, which means it will give more reasons for conversation. And so it happened!

New Cadillac has grown in length by 238 millimeters at once. The increase in other dimensions is more modest: 14 millimeters in width, 58 in height and 125 in wheelbase. Thus, the dimensions of the car are 5382 x 2059 x 1948 x 3071 mm.

The new GMT-T1XX platform means the transition to a fully independent suspension. Optionally, pneumatic suspension with adjustable clearance and adaptive shock absorbers are placed on both axles. This suspension can lower the body relative to the base position by 19 millimeters on the track and 25 on light off-road. There is also a "loading and landing" mode with an understatement of 51 millimeters. And when you turn on the lowered range of transmission, the car understands that a difficult road has begun, and raises the body by all 50 millimeters. Thus, the suspension travel is 101 millimeters. However, how many Cadillacs will see real off-road conditions?

Fairly judging, that there will be few representatives, marketers stuck 22 inches into the basic equipment. And on this giant, they don't seem overly large!

The main engine is the classic American "eight" of 6.2 liters. 425 “horses” and 623 Nm are under the hood. In order to somehow moderate its appetite, the car makers introduced a system for disconnecting half of the cylinders at low loads. And here is a surprise: It is difficult to believe that diesel would be transferred from the “popular” Chevrolet to Cadillac. But marketers spotted its potential. So now the Escalade can be ordered with a three-liter “six” on heavy fuel. Its parameters are 281 hp. And the same 623 Nm.

The gearbox for both engines is one, 10-speed automatic. Four-wheel drive in the USA is an option, but we will definitely see cars with only all driving wheels. There is an electronic rear differential lock.

Inside, you do not expect to see such an elegant dashboard. Stretched in narrow stripes horizontally, it has nothing to do with the monumental interiors of all four previous generations of the model. The fact that you are in an American car is reminded by the emblem on the steering wheel and the spaciousness in the cabin. Buyers will be offered eight interior design solutions that differ not only in the color of the materials, but also in their quality. For some elements, they say, a special finishing fabric was developed.

It is difficult to talk about the secondary, when a key detail of the interior attracts your attention - a huge, like the whole Escalade, display. Its first trick: it is curved. The second feature is that it runs on Organic LEDs (OLED). Strictly speaking, there are three screens: 7.2’ touch panel to the left of the steering wheel, 14.2’ virtual instrument cluster, and a multimedia center with a diagonal of 16.9 inches. In the description, Cadillac gives the total diagonal: 38.3 inches! Nobody really had this before.

Finally, we mention the AKG audio system (this is its first experience in the auto industry). The basic version offers 19 speakers, the advanced one - as many as 36. Among its functions sound amplification for better communication between passengers, the effect of playing music, as in a recording studio, navigation tips from the direction of the maneuver are mentioned.
