On September 14, 2018 the coastal cities of the American states of North and South Carolina, located in the east of the country, were hit by the first wave of the powerful “Florence” hurricane. At the moment, the water in some places rose to a level of two feet. Because of the floods, there were 700 thousand households without electricity supply. Now more than 20 thousand specialists are trying to restore the electricity lines.
15 thousand people were evacuated to temporary detention centers. 171 roads are closed due to a natural disaster, more than 1,500 flights have been canceled, and the largest airports of the east coast are closed. The state of emergency was introduced in North, South Carolina, Maryland, and Virginia, as well as in the US capital, Washington. According to the forecasts of the National Center for US Hurricanes, the disaster may affect more than 10 million people.
As reported by NBC, 17 people became victims of the storm "Florence" in the American states of North Carolina and South Carolina. One of the last victims is a pickup truck driver who was in an accident due to the high water level on the road near the town of Gilbert, North Carolina. This is confirmed by the state health department.
According to the US National Hurricane Centre, headquartered in Miami, today "Florence" has weakened to the category of a tropical cyclone. The wind speed in the epicenter of the atmospheric phenomenon is approximately 35.1 mph.
The cyclone is located 65 kilometers from the city of Columbia and continues to move deeper into the continent at the speed of 10 mph.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump expressed his sympathies to the families of the victims as a result of the hurricane "Florence" that hit the country. "Deepest sympathies and warmth go out to the families and friends of the victims. May God be with them!", - he wrote on Twitter.
“Florence” Hurricane – what is it?
Previously, "Florence" reached 4 marks on the Saffir-Simpson scale. This meant that the force of nature was able to raze the prefabricated houses to the ground, to root out all the trees and bushes, to break the billboards and disrupt the work of many communications. But to great happiness, the hurricane slowed down and eased to 2 marks. It will be a great luck if such dynamics continue because the consequences of hurricanes are truly catastrophic and the most terrible in this - huge human lives losses.
We recall you, that the hurricane "Florence” struck the Atlantic coast of the US last Friday.
