Sedan or SUV: what to choose?

Category: Blog views: 1200

Crossovers crush on all fronts setting aside all other types of bodies. Let’s figure out whether the SUVs are as perfect as they are considered to be.

Nowadays drivers increasingly pay attention to crossovers when choosing a car. They are in vogue, are considered to be more convenient and safe due to high landing and optional all-wheel drive. Their victims are close-priced sedans. Instead of the B-class sedans, slightly more expensive subcompact SUVs are chosen, instead of medium-sized four-doors – comparable in space in the cabin and the price SUVs.

Young drivers often choose a car more for self-assertion. But an ordinary sedan can also be status. It's no wonder that Bentley, Rolls-Royce, and Jaguar produced exclusively sedans, and the first SUVs appeared in the model line of these brands just recently – in favor of fashion. Of course, these are examples from the highest price category, but after all, Hyundai ‘Creta’ in relation to Hyundai "Solaris" is by no means a premium option.

It’s worth to mention, that young drivers without the driving experience should better choose an ordinary sedan, rather than a crossover. The SUV is larger in size, heavier, with a higher center of gravity. As a result, not knowing all the nuances of controlling the car, a novice driver foredooms himself to communicate with more complex techniques. The crossover heels more than a sedan in turns, its visibility is worse, the tendency to overturn is higher. In addition, the all-wheel drive mode can immediately change the behavior of the car, and the beginner will not be ready for it. Conclusion: the driver of the crossover should be more cautious in turns.

By the way, there is one interesting thing about the accidents! The SUVs have one feature which the sedans don’t have: when you hit things from the rear shelf and even from the trunk can fly to the head of the driver and passengers.

Moreover, putting something heavy in the trunk of the SUV is a more difficult task than in the case of a sedan. The sedan’s loading height is less, so it is easier to load anything there. On the other hand, it is impossible to load something of a big volume, for example, a washing machine. And, vice versa, it easy in a crossover!

When buying a crossover, you can forget about saving:

  • First, the SUV will cost more than a sedan of a similar class. In the case of an all-wheel-drive car, the extra charge is for the transmission, but buyers of mono-drive cars overpay for the image.
  • Secondly, routine maintenance will also cost more, even for a front-wheel-drive SUV, not to mention a more complex all-wheel-drive design.
  • Thirdly, the SUVs are characterized by the better fuel appetite (because of the worst aerodynamics and bigger weight) and require more expensive tires. The size of the tires is just more than the sedan has, that’s why you will have to pay additional money. You will also overpay on the car wash.

So, after weighing all the pros and cons, tell yourself: is it really necessary to have a crossover? The sedan is also not deprived of its advantages, and the apparent advantages of the SUV, in reality, can be a myth or not necessary for you.
