Subaru Legacy 2019

If the 2019 Subaru Legacy isn't the first choice, it certainly could be the best for many people. The sedan offers the desired interior space, feature list, comfort and safety, keeping up with rivals like the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. The standard all-wheel drive system has become a personal bonus of the car. And with the Nissan Altima and Ford Fusion being the only members of the class that also offer all-wheel drive, the modern Legacy is a great option for those who regularly deal with bad roads or weather. Add the excellent crash test results and a resell rating and you can see why the Legacy is a great option.

If safety is one of your top priorities, the all-wheel-drive Legacy is one of the best in class. Good economy, a spacious interior and a proven six-cylinder engine add to the appeal.

The Legacy 2019 doesn’t have many drawbacks, but it’s worth knowing about them. The buyer is not available hybrid models and manual transmission. Features like rain-sensing windshield wipers, ventilated front seats or a panoramic sunroof, all of which are found on most current competitors, are not available on the Legacy.

New in 2019

All current Legacies come standard with an "EyeSight" package that includes adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, lane departure warning and lane keeping. The Sport model gets blind-spot detection and rear cross-traffic alert, while the base Subaru Legacy gets two USB ports, a single-slot CD player and SiriusXM radio.

Driving impressions

The main reason the Legacy drives so well is the boxer engine. Unlike engines in which the cylinders are arranged in a row or in a V-shape, the pistons of boxer engines are placed parallel to the ground. This gives the powertrain a low seating position, giving the car a lower center of gravity, which means less body roll in corners. A 2.5-liter six-cylinder engine with 175 horsepower became the base for the Legacy, as an option a 3.6-liter six-cylinder with 256 horsepower is offered. An integral feature of the sedan has become an all-wheel drive system with active torque vectoring. The system is constantly active, which means that all wheels are constantly involved in the work. Ride stability is guaranteed regardless of the condition of the road surface. The variator, perfectly performing the main duties, reduces the fuel consumption of the Subaru Legacy. The Legacy is easy to handle, with plenty of steering feedback.

Interior

The current Legacy offers a modern, spacious and comfortable cabin for five. New in this year model are the Starlink audio system with a 6.5-inch screen, overhead light and the standard EyeSight. Both fabric and leather upholstery can be selected in grey, black or cream. The Starlink infotainment system can have a 6.5 or 8.0-inch screen. The Subaru Legacy driver's seat is a special place with 10 automatic adjustment modes and impressive lumbar support. The rear seats delight with personal space. The volume of the luggage compartment is 0.4 m3.

Exterior

The appearance of the sedan was slightly revised in 2019, most of all changes are noticeable in the grille area, which received the brand logo and horizontal lines in the center. Meanwhile, the Legacy remains a conservative midsize sedan. It doesn't have the expressiveness of a Kia Optima or an updated Toyota Camry, but offers its own sense of confidence and strength. The 2.5i Sport models look a bit more aggressive with a trunk spoiler and a black grille. Limited models with a 3.6l engine have two tailpipes.

Basic equipment

Even the cheapest Legacy 2.5i model comes standard with all-wheel drive, a six-way mechanical driver's seat, rear seats that fold down, a 6.5-inch infotainment system with 4 speakers, AM/FM/CD stereo, two USB ports, Bluetooth, SiriusXM radio and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. The 2.5i Premium model will add 10 automatic driver seat settings, dual-zone climate control, 17-inch wheels, heated front seats and side mirrors, a windshield deicer, an 8.0-inch infotainment system display, two front and one rear USB ports, and audio system with 6 speakers. The same model offers navigation, high beam assist, rear cross-traffic alert and a power sunroof.
