Tesla Announced the Release of Its Five Millionth Electric Car

Last week Tesla announced that it produced its 5 millionth electric vehicle, a milestone that many skeptics thought impossible not long ago. This year, Tesla plans to produce at least 1.8 million electric vehicles, which corresponds to the promise of a medium-term increase in production volumes by an average of 50% per year.

The manufacturer did not specify which model they are talking about. But more than 90% of Tesla's production program consists of Model 3 and Model Y electric vehicles. Therefore, one of these models was probably the “anniversary” car.

In the second quarter of 2023 alone, the company was able to produce 479,700 Tesla vehicles. The flagship Model Y crossover and the Model S liftback accounted for 19,489 units. The remaining 460,211 units were the budget Model Y crossover and Model 3 sedan.

Less than three weeks ago, Tesla introduced the updated Model 3 electric car. The car has seriously changed in appearance. The front of the electric car has been completely redesigned. New headlights, bumper, hood and fenders are installed here. At the rear, the Tesla Model 3 has new lights, a different trunk lid, a bumper and an inscription with the brand name instead of a logo. In addition, original 18- or 19-inch wheels were prepared especially for the new product. The length of the model has increased to 4720 mm.

The popularity of Tesla vehicles has skyrocketed over the past three years thanks to the brand's ever-growing lineup. It took the concern twelve years to reach the first million cars assembled. This indicator was registered in March 2020. Since then, production has increased sharply, passing the 2 million mark in less than 18 months and 3 million in another 11 months. Just seven months later, the concern had built more than 4 million vehicles. Since then, it took Tesla 6.5 months to reach 5 million.

In fact, Tesla is currently capable of producing more than 2 million electric vehicles annually. This positions the company to continue its rapid expansion.

Tesla plans to increase vehicle production to 20 million units annually by 2030. Tesla's largest assembly site is in Shanghai, which is capable of producing more than 750,000 Model Y and Model 3 electric vehicles per year. Last week, the Shanghai plant produced its 2 millionth electric vehicle. This made the factory the most productive in producing electric cars among other enterprises of the company. Tesla officially states that the Chinese plant has an annual capacity of more than 750,000 vehicles. But in reality it is believed to be around 1 million cars, making it Tesla's largest production site.

Tesla's next most important plant is its site in Fremont, California. The plant currently produces Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X. The total annual production capacity is 650,000 vehicles. The Berlin plant is designed to produce 375,000 electric cars per year. The Texas plant can produce about 250,000 vehicles per year, Electrek reports.

Tesla plans to open another large facility in Mexico in the near future, and is also interested in localizing the production of electric vehicles in India, where the growing car market offers significant potential.
