Many drivers remember the relatively inexpensive Toyota sports car, developed jointly with Subaru - GT86. Its production was completed in 2022, and as an alternative, the GR86 was released - in fact the second generation, although they decided to change the name. The name was changed due to heavy marketing over the Gazoo Racing (GR for short) division.

Recognizable and copyable appearance

Cooperation with Subaru has not stopped, Subaru has the same car, although it is still called BRZ. Toyota, in turn, visually distinguished the car with other bumpers and grilles, otherwise the appearance is identical.

Plus, it strongly resembles its predecessor, just look at the front LED headlights. The bumpers are also similar to the previous generation, but together with the headlights, they make the car a little less aggressive and, most interestingly, similar to the front of the Jaguar F-Type.

On the side, the 2020-2023 GR 86 is a classic coupe with rounded, aggressive shapes. Traditionally, sports cars left mirrors on the leg, as well as gills after the front arch.

At the back, a slightly strange shape due to the strongly raised trunk lid relative to the lights. The lanterns themselves are small and connected by a horizontal insert. Next, we see a huge bumper, which ends at the bottom with a plastic trim with reversing lights and two huge exhaust pipes.

Conservative interior

Usually the interior of Toyotas, especially inexpensive ones, is made of simple materials and does not differ much in technology. It's the same here, the designers kept the overall architecture, but added a few modern features.

The main innovation of the Toyota GR 86 interior is a 7-inch virtual instrument panel display that simulates analog gauges. Multimedia has become a little larger and more modern, here is an 8-inch screen that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It is noteworthy that in Japan the display will be larger and the buttons around it will be touch-sensitive, while European cars will remain on mechanical buttons.

New technology

The most important thing for buyers of these cars is the technical part, which has really changed here. From the old, only the platform, which was left the same, and the car was not transferred to the modular TNGA.

The engine is from Subaru - a 2.4-liter boxer FA24D that produces 235 horsepower and 250 H﮲m of torque. It is a naturally aspirated engine with a compression ratio of 12.5:1. A 6-speed gearbox is offered in pair, either manual or automatic. The GR 86 drive remained rear.

The dynamics of the car has become a second faster, while regardless of the gearbox it is the same - 6.3 seconds to a hundred and 226 km/h of maximum speed.

The suspension remained the same, all independent with MacPherson struts up front and independent double wishbones at the rear. Stabilizer struts are installed around, and an LSD limited slip differential was used at the rear.
