What is ContiSeal technology?

Category: Blog views: 1960

ContiSeal technology used in Continental tires means endowing the tire with additional puncture protection. Often these tires are called “self-sealing” (as one example, Continental ContiPremiumContact 6 ContiSeal tires) and, unlike the well-known RunFlat technology, there are much more advantages here.

As a rule, the technologies developed by tire manufacturers allow to get to the tire service on a punched wheel or somehow fill the air inside the wheel. All this makes these technologies quite popular. For example, Continental notes an increase in interest in its tires using ContiSeal technology, explaining that more and more often the driver does not want to get involved in the wheels changing on the road, especially during cold, rainy hours and at night.

What is ContiSeal Technology?

On the inside of the tire there is a uniform layer of special rubber polymer. If a puncture occurs, instantaneous tightening of the place of damage by this polymer occurs, due to which the tire pressure is not reduced. If you wish to remove the object that caused the puncture, the internal pressure of a certain amount of polymer is squeezed into the formed hole, thereby "vulcanizing" the tire.

It would seem that everything is fine and the driver has nothing to worry about, however, ContiSeal technology has a number of nuances:

- eliminates punctures, the diameter of which does not exceed 5 mm;

- there are not many tires with this technology;

-there is not much choice among dimensions and models;

- such tires are three times more expensive than usual ones;

- the tire has a greater weight (depending on the dimension, it can be up to 2 kg heavier);

- requires regular inspection of the wheels to detect punctures, because the driver simply cannot know about them.

Nevertheless, ContiSeal has much more advantages:

- You must not be afraid of a puncture and do not waste time on the installation of the "spare wheel";

- unlike RunFlat, no speed limits are provided;

- both the center of the tread and its shoulder area are protected from punctures;

- You can free the trunk by removing the spare wheel from it.

Popular Questions about ContiSeal Technology

1. What are the requirements for tire fitting equipment and wheel rims?

- When working with ContiSeal tires, it is allowed to use standard tire fitting equipment.

2. How does the polymer layer inside the tire affect the speed index, rolling resistance and overall comfort?

- All the listed characteristics are exactly the same as in standard tires, while the driver will not notice any difference while driving.

3. At what operating and temperature values does the sealing layer show maximum efficiency?

- The adhesion values and the required viscosity for the ContiSeal layer are stored in the temperature ranges recommended for operating the tire itself.  The type of the tire - winter tire or summer tire - does not affect its effectiveness.

4. What distance can I drive on such a tire if there is a puncture in it?

- The tires are used in normal conditions provided that the pressure inside is within acceptable limits, and the diameter of the puncture is not more than 5 mm.

5. Will I have to repair the tire with CotiSeal after tightening the puncture?

-“Continental” recommends, for safety reasons, to show a damaged tire to a specialist who assesses whether it needs additional repair.

6. How are tires with ConiSeal technology labeled?

- Products where this technology is applied are marked with a logo with its name in the form of an image of a stylized wheel.
