2019 MERCEDES-BENZ A 220

Mercedes-Benz has been selling cars in the US for decades, but until recently, Americans were denied sales of Class A cars that Mercedes supplied worldwide.

The 2019 Mercedes-Benz A-Class boasts peppy acceleration, an impressive interior and futuristic technology, but it also has a small trunk and mediocre rear seat space. The A-Class is not rated because it has not been fully crash tested.

Class A interior

The Mercedes-Benz A-Class sedan has five seats. Well-bolstered front seats keep you comfortable on long journeys and cornering. The cabin feels spacious, but tall drivers can feel a little out of place.
Rear-seat space is par for the course for a luxury four-door car. It's not the most spacious second row in the class, but mid-sized adults should have plenty of room to feel comfortable.
The A-Class has two sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats. The anchors are easy to find because they are behind the plastic flaps and not on the seat cushion. However, some force is required to push the car seat belt hooks into the recesses.

A-class interior quality

Although the A-Class is Mercedes' least expensive car, it lives up to the brand's standards for luxury interiors and luxurious materials. Most surfaces are soft to the touch. Standard aluminum trim accents and optional mahogany grain add an upscale vibe.

Cargo area

With just 8.6 cubic feet of space, the A-Class has one of the smallest trunks in the luxury small car class. It's still big enough to fit a few suitcases and the trunk opens wide.

A-class infotainment system

The 2020 A-Class features the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system, which is slowly making its way to all vehicles in the brand's lineup. This setup creates a virtual dashboard with a body that extends from the steering wheel to the center stack.

In standard form, the 7-inch digital display serves as the instrument cluster, while the 7-inch touchscreen is your infotainment center. You can also upgrade each screen to 10.25-inch devices, resulting in an almost fully connected digital display.

The MBUX system is quite simple. The touchpad on the center console gives you a different way to enter commands instead of the touch screen. Upgrading to a voice-activated personal assistant lets you say "Hey Mercedes" to find restaurant recommendations, adjust the climate, or switch between media.

With additional navigation available, the system can use augmented reality to help you find your destination. The front view camera projects the road ahead onto the infotainment screen and superimposes street names and turn directions on the image.

Android Auto and Apple CarPlay come standard and have five USB ports. However, these are all the latest versions of USB-C, so you may need an adapter to connect your smartphone to the car. This Mercedes does not offer wireless connections for smartphone integration, as some BMWs and Porsches do.

A-class performance

Class A engine: there are two reliable options

The base model A 220 comes with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 188 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. The A-Class is one of the few luxury small cars that has engines under 200 horsepower, but that's pretty impressive when tested. This little Benz takes off the line with enthusiasm, and the power delivery is smooth and steady as you keep accelerating.

The seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission is perfectly matched to the engine for smooth shifting. A few critics disagreed on how it shifts between gears in stop-and-go mode, but that's not a big issue.

New for this model is the performance-focused AMG A 35 model, with an AMG-tuned version of the base engine producing 302 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. This model comes with an AMG transmission.
