Family Kia Sedona
While SUVs and pickup trucks rule the sales charts these days, the venerable box on wheels with sliding doors - the minivan - remains the perfect choice for families or those in need of massive amounts of cargo space. And among the few minivans available, the Kia Sedona stands out for its combination of style and value.
Of course, the Sedona is competitive when compared to all standard minivans. A powerful V6 engine, a generous amount of cabin space and impressive seating comfort help carry seven or eight passengers with ease. In addition, the Sedona boasts an impressive exterior (for a minivan), as well as a dashboard and center console that have SUV-inspired design cues. If you don't normally like minivans, Kia's approach with its Sedona might well satisfy.
Kia also addressed one of our previous frustrations: uncompetitive fuel economy. While the Sedona still trails the Honda Odyssey by 3 liters for every 100 kilometers on the highway, the new eight-speed automatic transmission helps overlook the Kia's 5.5-liter lag before.
Models
The Kia Sedona is a family minivan that seats seven or eight passengers sold in four trim levels: L, LX, EX and SX. All Sedona minivans are powered by a 3.3-liter V6 engine (276 horsepower) that sends power to the front wheels via a new automatic transmission.
Standard highlights on the L trim include 17-inch wheels, automatic headlights, tilt and telescoping steering wheel, height-adjustable driver's seat, Slide-N-Stow forward-folding second-row seats in seven-passenger configuration, interior fabric upholstery, 60/40 inch reclining and folding third row seat, dual-zone climate control (with front and rear controls), Bluetooth, 7-inch touchscreen, rearview camera, Apple CarPlay Android Auto smartphone integration, and a quad-speaker sound system with USB and additional audio inputs.
The LX adds more power to the powertrain, and it also gets folding mirrors, power sliding doors, rear windows with blind-spot sensors, a range of seats (up to eight passengers), a power seat with 4-position driver memory, and a six-speaker audio system.
Exterior
From the outside, the Sedona looks the same as before, but the new front end, headlights, grille and fog lights are restyled to bring the Sedona in line with the rest of the Kia range. Five trim levels are still available: L, LX, EX/EX Premium, SX and SXL. SX and SXL trims get standard LED headlights, while all models get upgraded taillights and tailgate trim.
Depending on the trim level, new 17-, 18- and 19-inch wheels will be available. A new power sliding door feature has been added to the EX and higher trim levels, allowing entry at the push of a button on the alarm console.
Interior
Inside, Sedona gets a few new tweaks. Most notable will be new styling for the console and instrument cluster, with new graphics for both. A new redesigned smartphone charger has been added to the updated console, which also gets a new electronic parking brake, standard on SX and SXL trims.
A new USB charging port has been added to the rear for third-row passengers, while the rear entertainment system now features two 10.1-inch touchscreens located in the front seatbacks. It has the ability to mirror smartphone interfaces when used with compatible devices, allowing you to play videos directly from the connected device. The premium audio system is now a Harman Kardon system rather than the previous model's Infinity system.
Safety
The Sedona returns with a host of safety systems available, including smart cruise control with stop and go, rear cross traffic alert, blind spot alert, forward collision alert and autonomous emergency braking. But now it adds an attention monitor called "Driver Attention Alert" that monitors vehicle behavior to detect elevated levels of driver fatigue or inattention.
