Subaru WRX 2017-2018: the model that survived the facelift

November 2013 was special for fans of the Japanese Subaru brand, as it was the year when the fourth generation of the iconic Subaru WRX sports sedan, previously known as the Impreza, was introduced.

In comparison with the third-generation model, the novelty has acquired a more dynamic and modern appearance, received a higher-quality and equipped interior, as well as a more powerful engine and a new manual transmission.

At the beginning of 2017, during the North American auto show, "Subaru” presented a restyled version of the model, which received minor external improvements, even better finishing materials, as well as an expanded list of equipment that was not available before. In addition, the technical component was radically improved, which made the car even more frisky, responsive and predictable in management.

Subaru WRX exterior

The exterior of the restyled WRX can be described as "moderately predatory".

The "muzzle" of the sports sedan is represented by a 6-carbon false radiator grille, modern head optics, a raised hood with an impressive air intake, as well as a muscular front bumper, which received a huge air intake mouth and a pair of LED fog lamps.

The profile of the car shows inflated wheel arches, a domed roof, a long hood, as well as relief sides.

The stern of the sports sedan flaunts stylish parking lights, a compact trunk lid topped with a small spoiler, as well as a monumental rear bumper with a powerful diffuser and two pairs of exhaust pipes.

Special attention should be paid to the narrow "gills" of the air ducts located behind the arches of the front wheels, designed to improve the aerodynamics of the car.

The car rises at least 135 mm above the roadbed, which will be enough for most of the potential buyers of the model.

Like its predecessor, the car is offered in several variants of body coloring, to which two more colors were added – Lapis Blue and Pure Red. Already in the Subaru WRX base, it is equipped with 18” disks with low-profile tires.

Subaru WRX interior

For many years, motorists and automotive critics have scolded Subaru models for a fairly uniform and uninteresting interior design. And now, finally, the company listened to the comments and equipped the WRX model with a fairly modern, stylish and functional interior.

The driver's seat received a new multifunctional steering wheel with a slightly cut lower rim, as well as an informative instrument panel represented by a pair of analog dials and an on-board computer LCD monitor located between them.

In the upper part of the laconic central torpedo there is a small display that displays various information about the condition of the car. This is followed by a block of air ducts, a small display of the multimedia information center (with a maximum diagonal of 7 inches) and three functional twirlers responsible for controlling the car's climate system.

The front passengers are offered excellent seats with well-developed lateral support, optimal filler in terms of stiffness and a sufficient number of adjustments.

Between the seats of the first row, there is a fairly high transmission tunnel, on which the manufacturer has placed a comfortable armrest, a hand brake poker, a pair of cup holders and a gearbox lever.

The rear sofa is able to accommodate three riders, offering a fairly large amount of free space, by the standards of the golf class. It boasts a well-designed and ergonomic profile, as well as the possibility of folding, which allows you to transport a long cargo.

The trunk volume is standardly equal to 460 liters, but with the rear row folded, the user can count on more than a twofold increase in the amount of loading space. It is also worth mentioning that under the raised floor of the luggage compartment there is a repair kit and a spare wheel.

Technical characteristics of Subaru WRX 2018

The restyled Subaru WRX is offered exclusively with a 2-liter horizontal-opposed 4-cylinder gasoline engine, completely made of aluminum, as well as an aggregated direct fuel supply system, turbocharging and a 16-valve train. This engine allows you to develop a maximum of 268 "horses" (at 5600 rpm) and peak 350 Nm of torque (available in the range of 2400-5200 rpm). It is paired with either a 6-speed manual transmission, or a continuously variable variator "Lineatronic", available as an option.
